Processing
of hemp limestones
Ideally suited for self-building
The multi-talent for your home
The hemp limestone is used almost everywhere in the house:
As an external wall, directly insulating masonry, as a partition wall and internal acoustic wall, as full thermal insulation of existing structures as well as of new buildings, as floor insulation and in the renovation of old buildings.

CUTTING AND MILLING
Cutting and milling the hemp stones is very easy and can even be made easier by moistening the stones.
For efficient and clean work, an alligator or band saw is best suited. However, a conventional hand saw, circular saw, reciprocating saw, aerated concrete saw or a normal router can also be used. The best blade to use is a carbide or iron blade.
TEMPERATURE
Do not use bricks at temperatures above 35°C or below 5°C, as the lime mortar can burn due to too high temperatures and dry air, which can cause it to soak in too quickly. To avoid this, it is recommended that the bricks be briefly moistened before plastering at temperatures above 30°C.
FIRST ROW OF BRICKS
For exterior walls and walls on damp subsoil, a wall barrier membrane is laid under the wall. The wall must be absolutely and perfectly protected from rising damp.
Isohemp hemp blocks in new builds
NEW Isohemp HEMPRO-SYSTEM 2.0
- to build 100% with hemp. This 2.0 version of our Hempro system has interlocking bricks with numerous advantages:
- speedy mounting
- Less mortar required
- lighter stones
- more resistant stones
FRAME CONSTRUCTION (WOOD, METAL, CONCRETE)
insulating and breathable solid walls can be built with hemp bricks, as no additional insulating materials are required.
WOOD STRUCTURE
The hemp blocks form the shell of the building and give it the necessary thermal inertia for optimal comfort in summer and winter.
Hemp-limestone in renovation
INTERIOR INSULATION WITHOUT VAPOUR BARRIER; FOILS ETC.
Since hemp-lime bricks are very moisture-tolerant and moisture-regulating, have a high pH value that reduces the risk of mould and have good insulation values, they are particularly suitable for renovations and for measures to improve energy efficiency.
When renovating a building, special attention should be paid to a good connection between the existing walls and the new materials. IsoHemp hemp blocks guarantee efficient energy renovation for both interior and exterior insulation.
Due to the high diffusion openness and the high pH value of the lime, no vapour barrier is used for interior insulation. The resulting condensation water or condensation liquid does not affect the material. The hemp absorbs so much moisture that condensation will not occur - but even then the hemp stone would still insulate. Hemp-lime insulates even when damp. The moisture is transported capillary and by diffusion.
PARTITION WALLS, ACOUSTIC WALLS, SOUNDPROOF WALLS
Partition walls made of hemp blocks stand for lightness, simplicity and good sound insulation. They can also absorb moisture and release it again.
The sound transmission as well as the acoustics are effectively interrupted and reduced, as the hemp stone is very inhomogeneous in structure, disordered, composed of different densities and has a coarse surface.
With a double-wall system, you can achieve up to 57 dB sound reduction.
FLOOR AND ROOF
When you choose hemp blocks as insulation for floors and flat roofs, you choose efficiency thanks to the quick assembly and easy application.
Plastering the surface
Hemp stones must be plastered with breathable materials (e.g. the Hessler lime plaster system): Ideal paints for painting are sump lime paints or clay paints (indoors).
PLASTER STRUCTURE INSIDE
Moisten the wall before plastering
Hessler HP 9L Lime Base Plaster approx. 1.5 cm thick
Hessler HP 90 Lime finishing plaster (approx. 1.5 mm) or equivalent products
Clay plasters can also be used indoors. The plaster should always be cement-free and highly open to diffusion.
EXTERNAL PLASTER BUILD-UP
Moisten the wall before plastering
Plaster Hessler HP 9L Lime Base Plaster approx. 2 cm thick
Hessler HP 90 Lime finishing plaster (approx. 1.5 mm)
Exterior coatings should be applied with silicate paint.
Priming with Beeck Fixativ, painting with Beeckosil.
The plinth area must be protected from water, e.g. with an addition of 10% Roman lime to the HP 9L.
Reinforcement mesh is suggested over the entire surface for renovations, for new buildings only at key points (wall windows, wall doors, etc.)
The appropriate thin-bed mortar from Isohemp is used for bricklaying.
When all materials are used professionally and all accessories are used correctly, the entire system is extremely safe and easy to use.
Fastenings
For interior and exterior insulation, the hemp blocks must be mechanically fastened to the existing wall (dam plugs, 4 pieces per m²).
The existing wall must be statically stable and bear the weight of the insulation. Observe maximum widths and lengths!
WINDOWS, DOORS AND LINTELS
Windows in "normal" size can be mounted directly to the hemp blocks with a wooden frame. The wooden frame is fixed to the wall with 8/80 screws.
For "larger" windows, the skeleton is planned to the left and right of the window openings and the windows are fixed to it in the same way as the hemp stones are fixed to it
Lintels are realised from wood or from conventional brick lintels. The lintels support the masonry above the opening created. Following the principle of a vault, the IsoHemp lintels only support the triangular load of the masonry.
The IsoHemp lintels are prefabricated from hemp lime and reinforced with a reinforced concrete core. They are used for door and window openings in facades or walls made of hemp lime. They are ideal for new buildings and renovations indoors and outdoors. They minimise thermal bridges and provide a uniform and continuous dam envelope. The IsoHemp lintels are available in thicknesses of 9cm, 12cm, 15cm, 20cm, 30cm and in various lengths.
Advantages:
- minimise thermal bridges
- uniform and continuous substrate for the plaster
- saves time on site
- simple and quick application
TOILET, WASHBASIN, KITCHEN WALL UNITS
Toilets, washbasins, kitchen wall units, radiators and similar heavy objects are mounted on the supporting structure.
Why choose hemp stones
TEMPERATURE REGULIATION
They regulate the temperature thanks to their ability to gradually release the heat they absorb. They thus form a real heat buffer: the indoor temperature is kept constant and the effects of temperature fluctuations between day and night are significantly reduced.
MOISTURE REGULATION
They regulate the moisture balance of buildings thanks to their high water vapour permeability. They can buffer fluctuations in indoor humidity: they absorb water vapour when humidity rises and release it again when it falls.
SOUND INSULATION
The hemp stones dampen or absorb most of the sound waves and thus protect you from noise pollution.
FIRE RESISTANCE
They achieve reaction-to-fire class B-s1,d0 under EN 13501-1. They achieve a fire resistance of up to EI 240 (36 cm with plaster; 45 minutes at 7.5 cm), depending on the design and thickness.
MADE OF HEMP AND LIME
This hemp and lime solution also stores CO₂: 1 m² of wall made of IsoHemp hemp stones (PAL36EX, 36 cm) stores around 62 kg of CO₂ in the hemp (biogenic carbon), according to the FDES.
What else should be considered...
- Hemp stones must be protected from rain both during transport and on the construction site
- At the end of the day, the last row of bricks at the top is protected from rain, as are opened pallets
- During the construction phase, the wall is protected against water from above (ceiling, roof) and the water is specifically diverted from the ceiling etc. so that the wall is not soaked through
- When transporting, all hemp stones must be tied, protective angles are used under the tensioning strap to protect the edges
